Life is looking a little bit different for all of us this summer. From iconic music festivals like Glastonbury to global sporting events such as the Olympics, events everywhere have been postponed and cancelled, leaving summer plans scuppered for many.
In fact, new research from TalkTalk has revealed which of these events the public is going to miss the most this summer, with the Olympics, Wimbledon, live music concerts, Euro 2020 and live theatre making up the top five.
But, if there’s one thing this ‘new normal’ has taught us, it’s that virtual events, digital networks and online social activities can enable us to stay connected with the things that we love. So much so that 93% of Brits think having a fast, reliable internet connection in their home is important.

1. Of the events cancelled or postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, over a third (36%) said that they were planning to watch the Tokyo Olympics on TV. If you are one of the millions of people disappointed that you’ll have to wait until 2021 to see the athletes in action, then head over to the BBC Sport website where you can stream their Olympic Rewind episodes, starting with the 2008 Beijing Games.
2. Summer tennis institution Wimbledon followed closely in second with 31% of having planned to follow the action on TV. In its place you can watch the legendary men’s final between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal on BBC iPlayer, which is hosting a selection of the best Wimbledon matches from down the years. Just don’t forget your Pimm’s!
3. For those who had booked to see their favourite artist live in concert, then there are plenty of options to listen along at home. The Royal Albert Hall is streaming a series of live concerts on its website as part of its Royal Albert Home series, while Notting Hill Carnival has announced that live music and performances will be streamed on its website across the August Bank Holiday weekend.
4. Next up are the European Football Championships, which have been postponed till 2021. If a year is too long to wait ITV Hub is hosting all the matches from Euro 96, the last time the UK hosted a major men’s international football tournament. England fans had better prepare themselves for tears though!
5. And finally, if you won’t be able to follow through with plans to attend the theatre this summer then head over to Disney+ where you can watch the sell-out musical, Hamilton. It’s one not to be missed.
