The Poppleton Millennium Green Photography Competition launches this weekend with support from York’s Ultra Fibre Optic (UFO) from TalkTalk as it rolls out full fibre across the city.
Local amateur photographers of all ages are invited to enter their best shots of the Millennium Green to be in with a chance of winning a year’s free York’s UFO connection*, ChromeBook or Amazon Echo. Entrants can submit up to four pictures in each category: wildlife on the Green; four seasons of the year; unusual observations; and artistic impressions.
The winners will be chosen by the Millennium Green Trust and announced at the official awards ceremony. This will be held at the Tithe Barn in Nether Poppleton next summer where a selection of the entries will be on display. Each winner will get to take home a prize donated by York’s UFO from TalkTalk.
Submissions open on Monday 24 June 2019 and close on Tuesday 30 June 2020. More information can be found on the Millennium Green Facebook page and entry forms are located at the Poppleton Community Centre and Lemon Tree café in Nether Poppleton.
Competition organiser and Poppleton resident, Carol Partington, said: “We’re delighted to launch the competition for the local community which we hope will encourage photographers to try different techniques and embrace the wildlife that we have at the Green. Residents and businesses in Poppleton have recently been able to connect to York’s UFO from TalkTalk as it continues its rollout across the city. The next generation network is transforming the city’s internet connectivity with speeds of more than 900Mb. Both accessible and affordable, the full fibre connection makes it possible to download a two-hour HD film in several seconds or 100 songs in three seconds.
The network currently passes 33,000 homes and businesses; residents in Dringhouses, Woodthorpe, Foxwood, Chapelfields, Poppleton, Huntington, New Earswick, Rawcliffe, Clifton and parts of Holgate and The Groves are already able to connect. York’s UFO will be available to 55,000 homes and businesses across the city by 2020.
